NARRAGANSETT—Deborah Gist, Commissioner of Rhode Island’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, will be visiting Pier Middle School on Jan. 6 and will hold an open forum at Narragansett High School for the public as well as a meeting with the Board of Regents. She will meet with the public at Narragansett High School from 4 to 6 p.m. and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. will hold a forum. She will facilitate a discussion of a recent proposal to institute a tiered diploma system for secondary school graduates which would take into account the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) test.
“The test matters as much as anything else, not more than anything else,” Gist said in a webinar about the new diploma system. Later, she said, that the test is an “important component that cannot be washed away, but not the sole component.”
The Board of Regents meeting will give everyone a glance at a typical business meeting. The forum that follows in the auditorium will be a presentation of Commissioner Gist's Strategic Plan for Transformig Education in Rhode Island. There may be an opportunity for questions, though this remains uncertain.
