WARWICK, R.I. â Hookers are coming to a local library and they are encouraged to do so.
They have heard all the off-color jokes, so donât even start. They also have heard all the compliments.
The Little Rhody Thrummers â the Rhode Island Chapter of the Association of Traditional Rug Hooking Artists â will hold its next big show on Saturday, March 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Warwick Public Library, the very first time these hookers have filled this particular building.
The Little Rhody Thrummers are the only chapter in Rhode Island of the national group, meeting just five times each year. A planned January meeting in North Kingstown was set off kilter by snowfall.
2011 will mark nearly 25 years of making magnificent art work for The Thrummers, who were formed in 1987. The group is 60 members strong and it is clear that each has a sense of humor to coincide with an enormous amount of patience and talent.
âWe refer to ourselves as either hookers or rug hookers,â said Peggy OâConnor of North Kingstown, President of the Little Rhody Thrummers. âWe are hookers and joke about the dual meaning. We are used to the âhookerâ jokes.â
Technically, however, they are Thrummers.
âThrumming is pulling little pieces of wool through a backing,â said OâConnor. âWe make rugs by pulling strips of wood through a backing. You, and the public are, of course, welcome to visit and see the work in progress!â
They are not knitters. They are not quilters. What fun is thatâ I mean, how many knitting or quilting jokes have you ever heard, hmmmâ
OâConnor called her fellow Thrummers, âa fun group that get together five times a year for programs and to be inspired by each otherâs amazing work.â
To see the finished products is to marvel. The public is invited to do just that on Saturday, March 12, at the Warwick Library.
Thrummers are urged to get there by 9 a.m. to set up and attend a business meeting. Then, the hooked rugs will be on display for four hours, beginning at 10 a.m.
