Tempers flare at school committee meeting

August 28, 2014

NORTH KINGSTOWN—Frustration boiled over at Tuesday’s North Kingstown School Committee meeting as members had to wait for a quorum before commencing the voting portion of the agenda. With only three other members present, committee member William Mudge left the meeting without explanation.
Committee chair Kimberly Page asked Mudge to return, but he left the auditorium. Because committee members Robert Jones, Cheryl Clarkin, and Lynda Avanzato were not present, Mudge’s absence left the committee without a quorum through which votes could be passed or denied.
After public comment, the committee took a recess to wait for member Cheryl Clarkin to arrive. Clarkin said she had a work emergency and emailed committee clerk Laureen Berglund, but would have attended if she had known that a quorum would not be reached. Avanzato had contacted the committee in advance, stating that she was sick.
Upon Clarkin’s arrival, the meeting commenced and member John Boscardin had harsh words for his absent colleagues.
