EAST GREENWICH — Seniority will no longer be the driving force behind teacher assignments or promotions if school officials have their way.
Against a backdrop of nonexistent negotiations on a new teacher contract, which is set to expire Aug. 31, Superintendent Victor Mercurio presented the report of the Commission on Retaining High Quality Teachers to the School Committee Tuesday night.
Although representatives of the East Greenwich Educators Association, the union representing the district’s teachers, were among the eight members of the panel that have been meeting since last fall to put the document together, none were present for the meeting. Mercurio said no meetings have been scheduled with the union, which objected to the administration submitting its request to negotiate past the Dec. 1 state specified in the contract.
