SOUTH KINGSTOWN â The town council authorized the town tax assessor Monday night to abate taxes for people participating in the elderly tax abatement program in the amount of $326,000.
Town Manager Stephen Alfred said the town has the same number of participants as last year for a total of 227 applicants. There were more than 30 new applicants this year for the program.
Upon review of the program for this year, five applicants were deceased, nine previous applicants exceeded the income limit and seven did not respond.
âIn an effort to keep taxpayers on the program and avoid additional abatements for late filers, a follow-up letter was sent to 26 participants from last yearâs program that did not respond. Nineteen responded to this second request and seven did not,â Alfred said.
For last year, 10 participants were deceased and seven did not respond in 2010 for the program.
