There are reports circulating that Wagner's Danny Hurley will have a decision today as to if he will accept the offer to become the next coach of the University of Rhode Island men's basketball team, one thing is certain - it will be difficult for him to bring a key assistant coach along.
Bobby Hurley is Danny's older brother and currently an assistant at Wagner. A report from silive.com - a Staten Island-based website - said should Danny Hurley come to URI, the school would try to keep Bobby on as head coach.
Adding to that is Rhode Island state nepotism laws. The law says family members may "not hire, evaluate, supervise or otherwise participant in employment decisions affecting your family members."
When Jim Harrick was hired by URI in 1997, he wanted to hire his son, Jim Jr., as an assistant coach. The school needed a to file a petition with the state ethics commission, which allowed Jim Harrick Jr. to become an assistant coach, a move that turned out to be a disaster for the URI men's basketball program as a whole.
However, the move did not set a precedent. Speaking with a source from the state ethics department, it's a decision that is remembered well and not in a good way.
"They remember the Harrick decision and the commission has shown great regret," the source said. "In hindsight, they made a decision that they didn’t feel comfortable with."
