SOUTH KINGSTOWN â South County Hospital recently received a hospital safety score rating of âA,â one of only two hospitals to earn the highest ranking in Rhode Island.
The Leapfrog Group, an independent, non-profit healthcare transparency advocacy group, assessed the hospitalâs performance based on national performance measures.
âHospitals like South County Hospital that earn an âAâ have demonstrated their commitment to their patients and their community,â Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group said in a statement. âI congratulate South County Hospital for its safety excellence, and look forward to the day when all hospitals will match this standard.â
The Leapfrog Group assigns hospitals a score of A, B, C, D or F based on preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections. According to Leapfrog, the safety measurements considered represent the very basic blocks of medical care, such as hand-washing, computerized medication control and nurse staffing levels.Â
The safety scoring system, which uses performance measures from the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, to produce a single score representing a hospitalâs overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors.
âWe are pleased to learn of our âAâ rating from Leapfrog,â Lou Giancola, South County Hospital president and CEO said in a statement. âWe strive each day to meet the highest standards for safety and it is always gratifying to have an independent entity recognize this effort.â
The rating also provides South County Hospital and others with the opportunity to track progress they are making in improving safety, quality and efficiency of care provided.
The Hospital Safety Score is one piece of information consumers should use when planning a hospital stay, according the Leapfrog Group. The group recommends healthcare consumers use hospitals that receive an âAâ hospital safety score.
The only other hospital in Rhode Island that received a score of âAâ is Miriam Hospital in Providence. The Westerly Hospital earned a safety score of âB.â
