PEACE DALE – Seniors at the South Kingstown Senior Center learned how to save money at the grocery store while still eating healthy when SNAP nutritionist Melissa Holmes visited the center Tuesday morning.
Holmes visits 10 senior centers throughout Rhode Island each month as part of the SNAP-ED program, focusing on a different health topic. On Tuesday, Holmes discussed how to shop healthy and make a dollar go a long way. In the past, she discussed fast food restaurants and bran foods.
“Many people think when you go shopping, it’s hard to buy healthy foods,” Holmes said.

SNAP’s nutrition education component, SNAP-Ed, is administered through the University of Rhode Island Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences. URI SNAP-Ed is designed to empower participants with limited income to choose nutritious foods and be physically active for better health and well-being through interactive, science-based lessons and activities.
