Skippers topple SK

Rob Hazard and the NK boys basketball team beat South Kingstown Wednesday night.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN - The North Kingstown boys basketball team forced 28 turnovers and used strong runs at the end of the first half and start of the second half to take care of rival South Kingstown 71-46 Wednesday night.
The Rebels had just finished off a 9-2 run to cut an early deficit to 17-15 with 5:15 left in the half after a Chase Almond jumper, but the Skippers caught fire the rest of the half, outscoring SK 14-4 to take a 31-19 lead at the break.
South opened the second half with a basket by Rory McEntee, but NK forced eight turnovers on the next nine SK possessions and went on a 12-4 run - a combined 10 coming from Rob Hazard and Derryck Kilgore - to make it 43-25 with 11:12 left to play.
Kilgore led the Skippers with 20 points on 9 of 14 shooting and the senior pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds. Hazard added 18 points, three rebounds, three steals and three assists. Michael Scott was also in double figures, scoring 11 points on 4 of 11 shooting, going 3-for-7 from deep.
Gabe Martino led NK with four steals and tied with Cody Barner for the team lead in assists with four. NK finished the game hitting 28 of 73, but assisting on 18 of those makes and turning the ball over only 10 times.
For South Kingstown, McEntee's 15 points were a team high and Dylan Ferdinand was the only other Rebel in double figures. He scored 10.
