KINGSTONâThe Coventry girls volleyball team was forced to sit and wait in the stands at URIâs Keaney Gymnasium for well over an hour Tuesday night as Prout and Mount St. Charles battled back and forth in an epic, five-game showdown that the Crusaders ultimately won 21-25, 25-15, 20-25, 25-11, 19-17 to earn a spot in the Division I Finals.
Itâs safe to say the Oakers didnât mind, however, as what happened when they finally hit the floor was a moment eight years in the making.
Coventry senior Courtney DiBiasio had a team-high 11 kills, teammate Hannah Cole added 17 assists and the Oakers wasted little time in taking care of North Kingstown 25-23, 25-18, 25-15 to advance to their first state title game since the 2002 season.
âThis is what we set out for at the beginning of the year,â Coventry coach Leo Bush said afterward. âTo be one of the two teams playing in the last game. And North Kingstown is a great team and they put up a great fight and theyâve got a great group over there and their coaches did a great job getting them ready for this season. Weâre fortunate to be one of the last two teams out there.â
