SK woman's family blames EMS

August 12, 2011

Allen Sampson of 364 Curtis Corner Road lost his wife Juanita Morales Monday, Aug. 1. He and his family claim South Kingstown Emergency Medical Services did not respond quick enough to save his wife.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Last Monday, Aug. 1, a South Kingstown woman passed away after calling the police for assistance. After his wife lied unconscious in the living room, Allen Sampson stepped outside and saw South Kingstown Emergency Services waiting outside at the wrong house.

On Monday night at 1:01, Juanita Morales called South Kingstown Police to come to her home, located at 363 Curtis Corner Road, Apt. B8, because she was having an asthma attack and could not breathe. Morales lived in Champagne Heights, the South Kingstown Housing Authority complex.

According to Sampson, Morales, who was 45 years old, was on the phone with EMS for one minute and 52 seconds. Sampson said the EMS response time is 3 minutes and 52 seconds. Yet, at 1:05 a.m., Sampson said EMS was not at his home. At 1:06 a.m., Morales called police again for help.
Sampson said he came down stairs to find his wife having trouble breathing.

“I said if they’re not here by the time I get downstairs, I’d take her to the hospital,” Sampson said. “Then I heard a boom. It was my wife.”

Sampson found Morales on her back in the living room with her eyes rolled up and tongue out. He said she had not been breathing right for five minutes.

Sampson called police again. He said EMS told him they were right outside his door and he told them they were not. Then, Sampson went outside his B8 apartment. Across the narrow parking lot, he saw the EMS.

“I saw the EMS standing there outside around the truck like they were having a tailgate party,” Sampson said.

Now, all Sampson wants is justice.

However, EMS responded with in the normal response time according to the Director of Emergency Medical Services, Mike Demello.
