PEACE DALE – To help those in need during these economic times, the South Kingstown Teacher’s Union held its annual Have a Heart Fundraiser last month to support the local community.
The elementary school teachers, including West Kingston, Peace Dale, Matunuck, Wakefield and the Hazard Preschool raised $1,621 for the Johnnycake Center.

Broad Rock Middle School and Curtis Corner Middle School have raised money for the Women’s Domestic Center, while the South Kingstown High School teachers raised money for the Welcome House of South County.
This is the third year the teacher’s union has held the fundraiser to raise money for the community.

As part of the fundraiser, many local businesses donated raffle baskets and prizes to the cause.

“We’ve had a great response,” Nancy Cordy, a teacher from West Kingston Elementary School said. “At West Kingston, we did raffles and went around to local merchants asking them to contribute”

Cordy said one businesses that helped make a difference was Orbie’s on Main Street. Orbie’s donated a free cup of coffee for a year as a raffle prize.

MaryBeth Schmitt, a teacher from Peace Dale Elementary School said teachers from Peace Dale had raffle ideas in the form of service, in which a teacher would volunteer to organize the desk or room of the winner.
“We are very mindful of the economic burden that some of our own students and families are feeling at this time and we hope this will help in some way,” Cordy said.
