SOUTH KINGSTOWN â The Planning Board held a work shop session Tuesday night, focusing on the comprehensive plan and wind energy conversion system updates.
The comprehensive plan is an update to the community Plan developed in July 1992 with approval by the State of Rhode Island on March 11, 1996. South Kingstown has routinely amended the Comprehensive Community Plan as warranted. This update includes certain elements mandated by state regulation, including land use, housing, economic development, natural and cultural resources, services and facilities and open space and recreation.
On Tuesday night, the Planning Board focused on updating and editing changes to the housing element of the comprehensive plan. This element will include housing laws, data, housing achievements and policy changes.
The main issue on housing for the Board was differentiating between affordable housing and general housing. In the next update, the board hopes to separate issues pertinent to general housing and issues impacting affordable housing. The board aims to make the plan more inclusive of all general housing instead of just affordable housing that the draft currently focuses on. The board also wants to add information on historic homes and greenhouse development and efficiency within the updated plan as well.
The Planning Board will review the comprehensive plan again in two to three weeks where they will have obtained census town for the town that would help make their data more precise.
