Semi truck catches fire

July 28, 2014

COVENTRY — Firefighters from Coventry, West Warwick and Warwick doused the cab of a 54-foot tractor trailer truck with heavy foam to extinguish the flames that had fully engulfed it just moments before after responding Tuesday afternoon to the side lot of Home Depot located in the Centre of New England, where the cab was fully involved.
The truck driver, Charles Werner, from New York, works for the Cardinal Company and did not suffer injuries but said he has no idea how the fire started.
“I turned the key in the ignition and I saw smoke and fire so I grabbed the extinguisher and when that ran out, I ran into the store to ask for a garden hose but that didn’t work,” Werner said.
According to Hopkins Hill Fire Chief Frank Brown, the fire is still under investigation but he did say it did not take too long to extinguish it; however, one of the saddle gas tanks that holds extra fuel erupted, which caused another fire.
