WOOD RIVER JUNCTION - Town council members in all three Chariho towns have made efforts to request a greater level of transparency in the annual budget of the Chariho Regional School District.
The school committee has received letters from both the Hopkinton and Richmond town councils asking for a new standard of budget reporting that would make it easier for the councils, and for the public, to decipher the budget and to track specific funds across departments.
The issue was raised by the Charlestown Town Council as well, but the motion failed and no letter was sent.
“The councils are now requesting an executive summary of the budget,” said Chariho Supt. Barry Ricci.
Ricci plans to meet with a group of town councilors to discuss the matter and figure out a way to produce the type of summary that the councils are looking for. He said that Daniel Slattery, the Charlestown councilman who introduced the motion of requesting budget transparency to his council, will be arranging the meeting.
The letter from the Hopkinton Town Council, which is adressed Nov. 1, to Barry Ricci, acknowledges difficulties in formulating the budget and problems derived from the difference between the state’s new and old reporting formats.
