RITBA Board votes ‘yes’ to median barriers on Pell Bridge

June 19, 2014

JAMESTOWN—Last Wednesday evening, the Board of Directors at the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA) voted to install median barriers on the Pell Bridge. The measures have been researched by the authority in response to a number of deaths that have occurred in recent years involving vehicles crossing the non-barricaded median and striking oncoming traffic.
“Safety is of the utmost importance to RITBA,” said Beth Bailey, spokesperson for RITBA, in an email. “Adding a barrier weighing millions of tons on a 45-year old bridge required research to determine what impacts that barrier would have on the structural integrity of the bridge and the vehicles that use it.”
