Richmond responds to Charlestown’s Pipeline

September 4, 2014

RICHMOND - At a meeting on Tuesday night, the Richmond Town Council decided unanimously to authorize Town Administrator Robert Rock to pen a letter to the Town of Charlestown rebutting information in the July issue of the town’s monthly newsletter.
The Pipeline, a “municipal informational newsletter” authorized by the town hall, called the July issue a special edition and titled it “Impact of a Single Taxing District.”
It begins: “On several occasions this year, suggestions have been made to make a fundamental change to the Chariho Act through legislative action. The net effect of such action would create a single taxing district to fund the Chariho School District.”
It continues to run numbers that show devastating effects to Charlestown should a “single taxing district” go into effect.
Because the Richmond Town Council has offered legislation in the past regarding the Chariho Act - but only certain parts of it and in no way related to a single taxing district - the council unanimously took offense.
