RI commercial fishing results revealed

NARRAGANSETT — Members of the Commercial Fisheries Research Foundation (CFRF), the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), and other local commercial fishermen and marine science researchers gathered Wednesday evening to unveil the results of the Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program’s (CCEMP) study, “Rhode Island Commercial Fishing and Seafood Industries-The Development of an Industry Profile.”

CCEMP established a research team, lead by Emerson C. Hasbrouck and John Scotti of Cornell, which was charged with developing a study that marshaled all current and relevant data regarding the infrastructure and makeup, economically and socially, of Rhode Island’s commercial fishing industry. The project was funded by a NOAA award of $74,000, given out this past January.

“The CCEMP group really stepped up to the plate on a low budget and quick turn-around of six months,” said Peg Parker, Executive Director of CFRF. “They really put their hearts and souls into this project and did a great job.”

The group presented their final report Wednesday evening and discussed the methodologies that were utilized in their research.

“There has been a lot of interest from industry leaders, managers, policy advisors, and so forth, to come up with information in terms of where the fishing industry in Rhode Island is now,” said Hasbrouck.

“We used primarily existing data, including historical data, looking at what kind of reports are out there and adding additional information that wasn’t in our models,” said Scotti.

Sources of fisheries data was gathered specifically from resources such as Federal Vessel Trip Reports, state logbooks, mandated Standard Atlantic Fisheries Information System (SAFIS) reports, and surveys of prominent seafood dealers and processers throughout the state.
