KINGSTON — Leading by just three points in the third quarter against No. 16 Delaware Saturday, the University of Rhode Island football team’s defense found itself in the same position it’s been in numerous times this season.
After forcing the Blue Hens into a three-and-out, URI’s defense found itself back on the field when junior Brandon Johnson-Farrell muffed a punt and the 2010 Football Championship Subdivision runners up had the ball at the Rhody 11.
But, unlike many occasions in this difficult season for the Rams, the URI defense stood tall and forced Delaware to a field goal to tie the game. That stand turned out to be crucial as red-shirt sophomore quarterback Bobby Bentsen engineered two touchdown drives in the fourth quarter of a 38-34 home victory.
“It’s funny, because I don’t know if we made less mistakes today than we’ve made in the last three losses, but the thing that did happen today was we fed off one another,” Rhode Island coach Joe Trainer said. “It just seemed for the last couple of weeks, when something happened offensively, defensively we’d let up a touchdown.
