Quest school one step closer as town approves re-zoning

NARRAGANSETT–The Town Council approved a petition from Quest Montessori to re-zone a property off Boston Neck Road. The privately-owned 150-student school is currently located in Exeter and its head, Paul Raymond, has stated his intention to purchase the property from a developer who will build Narragansett Highlands–16 units of housing (eight of which are affordable) onto a six acre parcel of the property. Having secured approval by the council, the school must again return to the planning board and sewer subcommittee.

“As I looked at the water, sewer, traffic, and parking–I looked very closely–and I think the addition of this school would be an addition to the cultural fabric of the town,” Councilman Chris Wilkens said. “I think it would bring business into the north end. You can't quantify these things...but if you're going to have 150 students and 20 or 30 staff, you are going to bring life into that area." Wilkens added that the relationship between the proposed 12,500 square foot K-8 school and the town should be equivalent to a guest/host relationship.

In a Jan. 3 meeting, the Town Solicitor Mark McSally had reminded or possibly warned the council that it may want to provide adequate security to ensure that affordable housing and the school will be built.

There is some merit to a private for profit school locating in the North end. The land in question for a business will prove to be a use not consistent with commercial space. I see the traffic congestion along this stretch of Boston Neck Road every summer, and the increase each time a new business is allowed to build its own entrance/exit. And the sewer lines necessary for the proposed area would be expensive given the the need in a high water table parcel. I propose the use of land that is across the street in the under-developed industrial park for the tenant.
