EAST GREENWICH — They may not be harassing you, or walking down Main Street in packs displaying their colors.
But there are gang members passing through East Greenwich every day, whether it’s to work or go about their everyday tasks.
Providence Police Det. Sgt. Michael Wheeler, a member of the department’s anti-gang unit for 16 years and its leader since April 2005, did not raise a red flag over East Greenwich when he recently spoke to members of F.A.C.E.S. (Family Access to Community Empowerment Services) at the East Greenwich Police Station Community Room.
He does, however, want residents to know the town, and other nearby suburban communities, does not possess immunity from gang members and possible gang-related issues.
“They want a specific type of kid, but may not find what they want here,” said Wheeler, who does not believe gangs actively recruit in East Greenwich.
Problems could arise, however, if members of rival gangs encounter each other outside their turf in Providence and other urban communities.
