Pertussis cases in schools increase

April 30, 2014

EAST GREENWICH — The number of students who have contracted the pertussis illness has increased significantly since the first case was confirmed in the East Greenwich School District a little over a month ago.

The School District confirmed that a total of 20 students have the illness commonly known as ‘whooping cough,’ with 15 of them being at Cole Middle School, alone. Four students from Eldredge Elementary School and one from Hanaford Elementary School also have been recently diagnosed with pertussis, which is a bacterial infection that affects the lungs and breathing passages and is contagious.
