SOUTH KINGSTOWN – When Marie Eich of Saunderstown started her nursing career 23 years ago she had no idea she would love working in children’s neurodevelopment nor did she expect to become Rhode Island Hospital’s Nurse of the Year.

Yet, at Rhode Island Hospital’s annual Employee Service Awards Dinner, which honored nearly 1,100 employees at the hospital to celebrate major career milestones, such as anniversaries, new retirees and employees “of the year” winners, Eich, who works in the Children’s Neurodevelopment Center was recognized as nurse of the year.

“I was surprised. I feel like what I do every day is routine and just a part of my job,” Eich said of her award.

Despite Eich’s modesty, her clinical manager Nancy Bowering said she goes above and beyond as a nurse in the Children’s Neurodevelopment Center, which cares for children who have autism, attention deficient disorder and epilepsy and their families.

“She’s a great nurse. She’s smart and efficient and very compassionate,” Bowering said. “With the kind of population we work with, one has to be on top of all the different things going on with the child.”

to teach patients how to use new equipment, how to manage seizures and has to contact schools for updated recommendations for classroom placement.

“We take care of all those myriad of issues. That’s our vision [at the Children’s Neurodevelopment Center]. This is a small part of the child’s life. [Eich’s] focus and priorities is to assist the family and child to continue living their lives. She’s wonderful to work with,” Bowering said.
