CHARLESTOWN – The latest news-centric blog, Progressive Charlestown, to cover the town came to be when its owners were looking to stimulate political discussion amongst residents.
But Will Collette and Tom Ferrio sat on the idea until earlier this year as they wanted to make it an independent blog not tied to the Charlestown Democratic Town Committee. The decision to remove that link to the political committee came this past January, prior to the official launch of the website.
Ferrio had created an online mailing list and a blog for the town committee. But the list only really worked well for one-way communication. As for the blog, he believed it didn't meet the requirements to make it truly effective.
“A blog is best done with individual opinions, written with a sharp edge, and published in a short cycle,” Ferrio explained. “The consensus need in a committee blog doesn't satisfy any of those.”
Expanding on that thought was Collette. “We decided to make it an independent blog … only since January.,” he said. “As bloggers, Tom and I are free to express our opinions as our own. That will be the case for the new bloggers we hope to add in the very near future.”
Both Collette and Ferrio hope to the blog will stimulate thought and conversation around issues for Charlestown.
