National recall of stonefruit affecting local businesses

July 24, 2014

Local consumers were put on alert Monday as a California packaging company issued a voluntary recall of its stonefruit products. Wawona Packing Co. announced a voluntary recall of peach, nectarine and plum products contaminated by listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria which can cause severe illness and in some cases death if ingested.
Amy Philpott of Wawona Packing, Co. said on Tuesday that although the business does not ship its product to Rhode Island retailers directly, business such as Stop and Shop Supermarkets and Whole Foods have bought their product from wholesalers who buy from the company.
“We issued the nationwide recall because some of our customers distribute or reship the product,” she said. “The first thing the company did was shut down the packing lines that were implicated [and] where the fruit tested positive. At the same time, we started contacting direct customers immediately and asked them to remove product from inventory.”
