Narragansett centenarian honored by RIC

June 5, 2014

NARRAGANSETT – 100-year-old Narragansett resident Irene Kenny was conferred an Honorary Doctor of Pedagogy degree from Rhode Island College at the undergraduate commencement ceremony that took place on May 17 in front of an audience of over 9,000 graduates, family, and friends. Born in 1913 and originally from East Providence, Kenny was a major contributor to Rhode Island’s teaching community during her more active years and has inspired many others to become teachers.

Kenny graduated from Hope High School in 1931 and afterward was accepted into the College of Education at RIC (Class of 1935) at a time when there was no tuition fee to attend and books could be loaned from the library. During her time at the college, Kenny was part of a group of students who started a student rifle club.
