Mariners on to D-II finals

March 7, 2012

PROVIDENCE - The old adage is defense wins championships.
The Narragansett girls basketball team will find out for sure Saturday afternoon.
Using an aggressive three-quarter court trap, the Mariners forced 27 turnovers and in the second half turned most of them into points as Narragansett outscored Moses Brown by 22 points in the final 12 minutes, 40 seconds in its 55-32 win Tuesday night in the Division II Semifinals at Rhode Island College.
The Mariners move on to the D-II final Saturday at the Ryan Center at 4:30 against Classical, which beat Johnston 38-37 in early game Tuesday.
Freshman Chelsea Sahagian led the defense with seven steals, five coming in the second half. Narragansett had 18 steals in the game as Abby McKanna had four, Jackie Iannucci had three and Leia Mistowski and Mercedes Harris both had two.
Narragansett also rebounded well Tuesday and didn't give up an offensive rebound until there was 40 seconds left in the first half. The Mariners outrebounded Moses Brown 42-34 but only have up 11 offensive rebounds in the game. Harris paced the team with 12 boards, Mistowski had seven and McKanna had six.
McKanna, a freshman, led Narragansett with 17 points to go with Sahagian's 16. Harris was the only other Mariner in double figures with 10 points on 5 of 9 shooting from the floor.
