While state legislators work to conduct a plan for pension reform, bids to amend aspects of the bill are taking place.
Rep. Patricia Morgan, representative of District 26—Coventry, Warwick, West Warwick–has written up a bid that includes two amendments to the pension reform bill.
The first amendment, she explained, would be to stop the use of “double dipping.”
She said that she wants to postpone the pension of government employees who have retired from one taxpayer job to begin another one.
She explained, for example, that a police officer could retire when they are 40 from one community and begin collecting a pension.
She said that the officer could then begin a new job in a different community, but that the community they retired from paid for their experience and is currently paying their pension, even though they remain working.
Morgan said that her bid explains that once they are fully retired from all government jobs, then the collection of their pension can begin.
