Local man files suit against soccer star

August 7, 2014

PROVIDENCE — A local man has filed a complaint with U.S. District Court against a world-renowned soccer player regarding the trademark of a logo on merchandise.
Christopher Renzi, reportedly of East Greenwich, is suing Real Madrid and Portuguese National Team captain Cristiano Ronaldo and Denmark-based JBS Textile Group over the use of the “CR7” emblem, a logo that the star athlete, according to court documents, was hoping to inscribe on a new underwear line that would be released in the United States in the very near future.
However, according to the lawsuit that was filed back on July 28, Renzi claims that he has been using the “CR7”

trademark in commerce since 2008. The court documents state that on June 25, 2008, Renzi filed an application to register the trademark with the United States Patent Office for “use of clothing, namely jeans and T-shirts.”
