NORTH KINGSTOWN â The 2010 Christmas shopping season is now in full swing and what better place to buy gifts is right here in your backyard?
Thatâs the question many local businesses are asking as many of the shops in Wickford, and throughout Rhode Island, have begun their holiday season with open houses and major sales.
Donna Trottier owner of The Blue Hydrangea, located at 2 Main St., markets her merchandise as âcute and reasonableâ.
Customers can spend $20 and walk away with a bag-full of items, including hostess gifts, unique napkins, jewelry, books and much more.
In addition, she has everything you need to decorate your home for the holidays.
Located just doors down from Blue Hydrangea is Mystic Scrimshanders. The business, which can be found at 14 Main St., will be holding a Baltic Amber Jewelry Show during the Festival of Lights ceremonies this weekend. Scrimshanders offer a wide variety of handmade jewelry, artwork and other items.
Since last Christmas, new businesses have come into the village. Located behind Bagelz on West Main Street is Foodies of Wickford, a business that sells an array of Artisan cheeses, decadent chocolate truffles and a varieties of spreads.
Like Pandora, Trollbeads have become very popular and the holiday collection has just arrived at Different Drummer, located at 7 West Main St., in the form of an assortment of silver and glass beads. Also available are Skeem soy candles in silk-screened glasses that come in a variety of bright colors and patterns.
If that wasnât enough, Small Business Saturday, which was originally only going to be a one-day event held last Saturday, Nov. 27, has now been extended until the end of December. Sponsored by American Express, the idea behind the promotion was for shoppers to get out in their communities and buy local with their American Express card.
All registered cardholders would receive a $25 statement credit when they spent a minimum of $25 at any small businesses.
According to American Express, for every $100 spent at local businesses, $68 returns to the community.
This program is only eligible to small businesses that have a website or Facebook fan page and $10 million in annual revenue or less.
