CHARLESTOWN - In the wake of Hurricane Irene, which ripped through the Northeast over the weekend, the majority of Charlestown’s residents were without power.

According to National Grid, approximately 4,700 of the town’s 5,700 customers, or 82 percent, were without electrical power Monday afternoon. According to the Charlestown Citizens Alliance, that number held steady through Tuesday morning.

Due to large power lines downed on Route 112, one of the places in Charlestown that had to go without power was town hall. Town Manager William DiLibero said that town hall regained power Tuesday afternoon. Dilibero also said that by Wednesday morning, an estimated 50 percent of town was still without power.

“A good deal of the town is without power,” DiLibero said Monday, when the number of powerless residents was still above 80 percent. “Some large wires are down and that’s causing a major problem.”

He continued to say that aside from the power outages, Irene did not really cause too much damage.

“There was minimal damage to houses and minimal flooding,” he said, “but there were some trees down as well.”

DiLibero then spoke of the cost to the town that Irene caused.

“Most of the cost is public works staff time,” he said. “They are out there trimming trees and clearing areas, also removing sand that washed up over the roads.”

While there was a good amount of sand displaced from the beaches, the beaches were not damaged too severely, and according to DiLibero, they opened Tuesday morning.

“The beaches were open [Tuesday] morning, there was not much damage,” he said. “However, we did have some damage to the breach-way. a new cut was made and will need to be filled.”
