SOUTH KINGSTOWN - The Jonnycake Center has been celebrating its 40th anniversary all through 2013, culminating in an open house and public celebration at the center on Tuesday night.

It has been 40 years since a 1974 Narragansett Times article about the plight of a South Kingstown widow who was living off of $1.25 a week after rent, utilities and gas spurred the creation of the center that calls the Peace Dale Rotary home.

“The article sparked community outrage and action,” said Lisa Wright, deputy director and development officer at the Jonnycake Center.
