Update from the Department of Environmental Management: State parks, beaches and management areas will be closed on Sunday, Aug. 28 due to expected arrival of Hurricane Irene.
Most state beaches will be open on Saturday, Aug. 27, subject to local evacuation plans and restrictions. Misquamicut State Beach in Westerly will be closed on Saturday. East Beach and Charlestown Breachway State Beach in Charlestown will be open until 12p.m. on Saturday. Swimming restrictions - i.e. depth limits to waist or knee deep, or designated swimming areas - will be put into place as warranted by the weather conditions at each facility.
State parks and management areas will remain open on Saturday, August 27. There may be limited access in coastal areas such as Beavertail, Fort Wetherill, Camp Cronin, and Brenton Point as deemed necessary.
All state beaches, parks, and management areas will be closed and not in operation on Sunday, Aug. 28. Public access to these facilities will be restricted. Gates at state beach parking lots will remain closed, and state park and management area entrances will be secured with traffic barriers.
Facilities will be assessed Monday for storm damage and will reopen as quickly as possible once public access and safety concerns are addressed. All state beaches will remain closed until the Department of Health gives final approval on water quality for their reopening.
