CHARLESTOWN — After several false starts, Churchwoods, a 24-unit senior affordable housing development, has been approved as part of the second round of Rhode Island’s disaster recovery action plan through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). According to Senator Jack Reed’s office, the project will be funded as part of a $19.4 million Community Development Block Grant, Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) that was designated for long-term recovery efforts related to Hurricane Sandy. Washington County will receive the majority of the grant awards because it had the highest concentration of impact from Hurricane Sandy.
In November 2013, Churchwoods was rejected by Rhode Island Housing even though the agency initially gave the town the go-ahead, which resulted in Charlestown spending $100,000 on preliminary development work.
