Hopkinton council considers re-zoning parcel

June 27, 2011

HOPKINTON – A significant chunk of undeveloped land off of Route RI-3 in Hopkinton could potentially be re-zoned to accommodate a manufacturing or industrial business.

The Town Council decided to extend the hearing to a later date at the council meeting on Monday, June 20.

Roy Dubs, of 10 Wicasta Farm Road, Hope Valley, is seeking to change the zoning restrictions in hope that the land he owns at 310 Main St. in Hopkinton will become desirable for a specific type of business. The land is currently zoned RFR-80, which permits usage such as agriculture and family homes, but Dubs seeks to change the zoning to Manufacturing/Light Industrial.

This particular type of zone would allow a manufacturing business to use the land, an idea that faced both support and uncertainty from the residents who attended the meeting. However, the Manufacturing/Light Industry zone does not yet exist in town, so it would need to be formulated before moving forward.

“First we need to figure out the zoning,” said Town Council Vice President Thomas Buck, “we can’t change the zoning to a zone that’s not in place yet.”
