Hate crime rocks church

October 29, 2013

Vandalism that was committed sometime over the weekend has made a ruin out of the Harvest Fellowship Church of God at 747 Main St. in Phenix. Jessica Boisclair. Daily Times.

WEST WARWICK— A local church congregation was shocked by an act of vandalism during the weekend that left the building in ruins.

Pastor Kenneth Ordway of the Harvest Fellowship Church of God, 747 Main St., explained that on Sunday morning he walked into his church to find the place completely desecrated.

The walls were spray painted from floor to ceiling, the chairs and carpet were spray painted and items were stolen and smashed.

“They broke into the roof because on top of the roof is a vent and they went through a crawl space in the duct work,” he said. “We had the police department and detectives go up on the roof with the fire department and they saw that they broke the vent to get in.”

While Ordway is not positive about when the vandalism occurred, he said a tenant who lives above the church heard noises Friday night.

“The tenant said they heard some noise and he thought we were doing repairs or something and had no clue,” he added. “But he said on Saturday morning there was a tremendous paint smell in his apartment and he got curious.”
