WAKEFIELD-An 882 pound pumpkin decorates the the outside foyer at Shaw’s Supermarket in Wakefield.
The giant gourd has inspired the general manager at the supermarket to create a contest with three turkey dinners as the top prize.
“We decided to come up with the contest of guessing how many seeds are inside the pumpkin. We’re going to give the three closets guesses a free Thanksgiving turkey dinner,” said Ray Lorenzo, general manager at Shaw’s.
All you have to do is visit the courtesy desk to enter.
While you are there, you may notice a jar with some money in it.
The jar is there to help support the Johnnycake Center this holiday season.
Everyone who enters the contest is invited to donate money for food this fall.
“It’s a win, win for our customers. We work with the Johnnycake Center all year long and our customers really respond. We want to help people who are hungry, get some food,” said Lorenzo.
Thus far, the store has received about 125 pumpkin seed guesses, from customers and store associates.
So who will be in charge of counting all those great pumpkin seeds?
“The gentleman farmer Sean Kreuger, the father of the pumpkin as I call him, he’ll take it home and carve it up and count the seeds. Naturally, he wants the seeds to grow more big pumpkins next year,” said Lorenzo.
