EAST GREENWICH — East Greenwich’s first venture into the world of co-op interscholastic sports may put five local girls on the ice for R.I. Interscholastic League hockey this winter.
The School Committee voted unanimously Tuesday night to endorse a request by East Greenwich High School Athletic Director Chris Cobain to enter a pilot agreement with Cranston to create a co-op girls’ hockey team, bringing together players from East Greenwich, Cranston West and Cranston East high schools.
Cobain and Mike Traficante, Cranston school athletic director, will request a waiver from the RIIL’s Principals’ Committee on Athletics at a Monday meeting which would allow them to operate a co-op team. Due to their size, the two Cranston schools needed a waiver last year to play with a combined team.
