Friday update: Full power restoration inches closer

September 2, 2011

Slowly, the lights are popping back on in East Greenwich.
As of midday Friday, only 305 National Grid customers remain without power in East Greenwich, according to the utility company's website. All but 251 of National Grid's 5,993 local customers lost power as a result of Hurricane Irene's damaging visit to the area on Sunday.
The largest clusters of homes remaining without power are in the Tillinghast Road area and the Historic District near Division Street, according to the site, adding that power is expected to be restored completely in East Greenwich by late Sunday evening. However, town crews will not be allowed to cut downed trees near downed power lines until National Grid certifies the lines are dead.
The local trash pickup schedule, meanwhile, has been delayed one day this week and will be delayed one day next week because of the Labor Day holiday, according to the town's statement on its website.
Residents are asked to leave brush and bagged twigs and leaves at curbside for town public works crews or their contractors to pick up. That material will not be accepted at the town's transfer station.
Residents with spoiled food are asked to double-bag it and leave it curbside on the day of trash pickup or bring it to the transfer station, which will be open Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The parking lookout at the town dock will be closed tomorrow to accommodate storm cleanup operations.
Two weekend holiday celebrations, the Summer's End concert Friday night at Eldredge Field and the East Greenwich Art Festival Saturday at New England Institute of Technology, will proceed as scheduled.
Local schools will open Tuesday, with kindergarten orientation Tuesday and the first day of kindergarten classes on Wednesday. Freshman orientation at East Greenwich High School will be postponed indefinitely.
Town officials will issue further updates as needed at
