COVENTRY —The Western Coventry Board of Directors, along with Fire Chief Steven Quattrini went over what they called “the very preliminary budget numbers” for 2014 during Thursday’s board meeting and so far, the only significant increase appears to be with training and gear.

According to the board’s presentation, there is a proposed increase of $3,315 compared to last years at $9,110.

Because the department is majority volunteer with only three paid personnel, their budget is very different from other districts, however, there has been an increase in membership and more specialized training, which costs more due to the number of volunteers and the type of training it is.

Quattrini explained the need for six sets of new turnout gear at a cost of $11,736.

“We separate out the training,” said the chief. “The treasurer will project some numbers, I’ll do the same then we’ll discus what needs to be adjusted and the budget number has increased because we’re using state instructors and we have more people to outfit.”
