WARWICK â Central Coventry Fire Chief Andrew Baynes called the current functionality of the fire district âmarginalâ when he testified during the fire districtâs latest hearing regarding possible liquidation Friday afternoon.
âThings are no different than they were 15 months ago other than us continuing to pour money into the newer rescues,â he said. âThe 2002 rescue is the one thatâs running so there newer ones we have â the 2007 and 2009 â are being fixed, so the newer ones arenât that reliable either but at least we know what we have.â
Baynes said the normal time frame for the life of the truck is 10 years if itâs the front line then five years if itâs a reserve.
Baynes had to break it to the judge that there is no contingency plan for the equipment because other areas departments are having similar issues - lack of equipment.
âOther departments donât necessarily have equipment for us to borrow and because itâs usually a mutual thing, we haven nothing they want to use,â Baynes said.
As the fire chief testified before a full courtroom, it was clear in his message that the fire district is running on fumes and heâs not sure what to do at this point.
