West Greenwich, Rhode Island
A winter adventure sleep-away camp for children is planned for
February public school vacation. From February 22 to 25, 2011, the
University of Rhode Island's W. Alton Jones Campus in West Greenwich,
RI will host February School Vacation Camp for 40 to 50 children ages 9-13.
The camp staff will encourage children to get involved in active
outdoor winter play such as sledding, snowshoeing and
ice-skating. Other activities include winter games, s'mores by the
fire, maple sugaring, snowball target practice, pirate dinner, winter
arts and crafts, broom ball on ice, snow sculpture and winter ecology.
Outdoor skills, conservation and ecology are the focus of the
camp. Campers will investigate life under frozen ponds, track
animals through the snow, view winter constellations, go on a night
hike and share stories around a campfire.
After a day outside, the wood and glass main lodge with fieldstone
fireplaces, dining hall and meeting rooms is an ideal place to gather
for a warm, home-cooked meal. Overnight accommodations offer heated
cabins with pine bunk beds, clean restrooms and hot showers.
With 2,300 acres of forest, ponds, trails and farmland, URI's W.
Alton Jones Campus offers children a big backyard that's perfect for
outdoor adventure. Each year more than 10,000 children visit the
campus to learn about the environment up-close by exploring outside
in a fun hands-on natural setting. The combination of education and
camp fun makes learning seem like a vacation.
The fee for February School Vacation Camp is $410, which includes all
meals, activities, 24-hour supervision and lodging in bunk-style
cabins from Tuesday at 8:30 AM through Friday at 2:30 PM. For more
