An epic family bicycle ride for MS

August 20, 2014

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – John and Ethan Thoms arrived on Saturday on East Matunuck Beach, each on a recumbent bicycle. Tired, sweating, and packed with supplies, an onlooker might have thought the two had just finished the longest bike ride of their lives. In fact, they had. They had come from Astoria, Ore.
A long-time supporter of Bike MS, a non-profit group that arranges and supports bicycle fundraisers for Multiple Sclerosis research, treatment and awareness, John Thoms decided one day to take his work with MS a step further.
“This was a dream that I had,” he said on Monday. “I got my MBA recently – in June – and I decided that after I got that I was going to ride my bike across the country. I asked my son if he wanted to do it and he did, so we went. We figured out how to do it, bought a couple of bikes and did it.”
This time supporting MS through a do-it-yourself fundraiser, the duo saw a lot along the ride, posting about it to John’s Tumblr Blog throughout.
