An East Greenwich police lieutenant accused of assaulting a suspect in custody stood before a judge Tuesday and entered ‘not guilty’ pleas at Kent County Courthouse.

According to published reports, Lt. Paul Nahrgang, 46, pleaded not guilty to the charges of disorderly conduct and simple assault for allegedly using excessive force against a 44-year-old victim who was arrested earlier in the evening on May 22 at the East Greenwich Police Station.
As previously reported in The Pendulum, Nahrgang, of 46 Landis Dr. in East Greenwich, turned himself in to Rhode Island State Police last Tuesday after an arrest warrant was issued in connection with the incident.
Following an internal investigation with Deputy Chief Stephen Brown, East Greenwich Police Chief Thomas Coyle suspended Nahrgang from the force before turning the investigation over to the State Police.
According to published reports, Nahrgang is due back in court next Tuesday.
