EG filled with aroma of fresh-baked Swedish sweets

EAST GREENWICH — It all started with the closure of a Rumford bakery famous for its Swedish coffee bread.

When Nancy Swanson, the person who typically bought the loaves for her church’s Sunday morning fellowship hour, found them unavailable she began baking the bread herself, tweaking her own recipe until it was so good parishioners encouraged her to market it.

One door closed and another opened for Swanson and her partner, Patti Reslow, both members of First Lutheran Church on Division Street, in the historic neighborhood long called Swede Hill for the immigrants who settled there.

After spending most of the summer obtaining the necessary approvals from the church – where they use the recently-refurbished kitchen for their baking – as well as the town and the Secretary of State, they launched the business on Sept. 1.

Calling their little company Swede-a-Licious, they’ve been creating a host of fresh-baked treats which they sell through in-person and on-line orders. They donate a portion of their baked goods to the church food pantry.

The baking, done on Monday and Thursday, is tailored to the orders received and is either delivered or picked up by their patrons on the same day.
