Drug report doesn't tell all

January 4, 2012

EAST GREENWICH — Aside from one teen drinking party that produced 26 arrests, there's little change in the raw numbers compiled in the East Greenwich Drug Program's Mid-Year Report for the period of July 1 to Dec. 19, 2011.

However, Bob Houghtaling, town substance abuse prevention coordinator, admits he worries about a subject not reflected yet in the numbers: abuse of prescription medications.

“A lot of people are using prescription drugs,” he said, based on anecdotal evidence he's learned from frequent visits to local schools. “A lot of kids are using and abusing prescription medications, but not all of them have hit the radar yet.”
