Draft for plan just about set

November 3, 2011

EAST GREENWICH — With the final draft virtually complete, the town’s new comprehensive plan may be ready for both review by the public and approval by the Town Council before the holidays.

Sam Shamoon, the consultant responsible for drawing up the plan which is to guide the town’s development for the next 20 years, was questioned about the final draft by the Planning Board on Oct. 19.

The draft sits at 111 pages, with the land use portion undergoing revision after the state Supreme Court’s recent ruling barring the town from collecting payments from residential developers in lieu of required development of affordable housing units. Also, there are maps to be added to the final product.

While board members had remaining concerns about several portions of the plan, Shamoon’s work received generally favorable reviews.

“It’s an excellent representation of the Town of East Greenwich,” said board chairman Bradford Bishop. “We have a fine comprehensive plan here.”

“Getting input from 50 people and getting it into an easy-to-read document is no easy feat,” added board member Stephen Brusini.

The next step is the Planning Board’s approval of the final plan, which Town Planner Lisa Bourbonnais said would likely be scheduled for Nov. 16. The plan would then be given a joint public hearing by the Planning Board and Town Council, and be posted on the town’s website.
