PROVIDENCE – The Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) held a public hearing on Tuesday evening at the Department of Administration in Providence to make a final decision on the future of the town of South Kingstown’s proposal to build a seawall on Matunuck Beach Road near the Ocean Mist restaurant and bar. After a 5-4 vote the council approved the special exception requested by the town.
The wall, proposed as a 200-foot steel and concrete vertical structure driven into the sand, has been a much debated topic for locals since the council originally approved the decision in 2012 and was later appealed by Ocean Mist.
The decision sparked significant anger and frustration among members of the public, many of whom were heard yelling and verbally objecting to the decision in frustration.
