NARRAGANSETT—The town council held a special meeting Monday evening to discuss the constituent parts of the Canonchet Farm Master Plan, and to determine the council’s position on each.
Most of the items on the executive summary of the Canonchet Farm Master Plan passed unanimously. The executive summary of the Master Plan must go through further examination and policy building in order for the town to implement it as a report. Monday evening’s meeting was the first opportunity for the town council to make decisions regarding the conceptual framework of such a report, which will be created in the near future.
Certain items on the executive summary regard the usage of the farm itself. The council voted not to offer camping facilities except for on a case by case basis, and also allows for the potential of further development of the South County Museum and its immediate vicinity. Possible improvements to nature trails, as a major component to the overall experience of Canonchet Farm, were also approved, including widening certain trails and building a boardwalk over marsh areas.
The potential construction of a nature/visitor’s center was also discussed and approved, although no particular location has been decided upon. The building of a tall viewing tower would be included in a nature center design and would offer a unique education experience for the public. The implementation of fishing docks and kayak launches on Lake Canonchet and Little Neck Pond would further enhance public usage of the Canonchet Farm site.
