Deborah Gist can add the Town of East Greenwich to her list of supporters in her pursuit of hoping to remain Commissioner of the State’s Department of Education.
In a letter dated May 28 that was co-signed by Town Council President Michael Isaacs and fellow Councilmen Michael Kiernan, Jeffrey Cianciolo, Brad Bishop and Mark Gee, the Town Council is urging the Board of Education and Chairwoman Eva Marie Mancuso to renew the contract of Commissioner Gist.
The brief letter cites that Gist has brought Rhode Island leadership – which the Council describes as “a most important attribute” – and that it’s important that Gist should be given “sufficient time” to continue to move the state’s education forward.
“Change is never easy and significant change in education is even more difficult,” the Council says in the letter. “We are persuaded that Commissioner Gist is moving our educational system in the right directions to assure that Rhode Island’s students will be prepared and for a world that is increasingly demanding.
“We urge the Board to balance the expected difficulties with the need for significant change and to provide Commissioner Gist with the time and support needed for her to be successful.
